The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Michigan State University (MSU) in East Lansing, Michigan seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the area of Mass Spectrometry and/or Metabolomics. Academic interests of candidates can be broad but are expected to possess expertise in the isolation, analysis, and annotation of small molecules within complex biological matrices and/or extracts using mass spectrometry and/or complementary approaches such as NMR, x-ray crystallography, cryo-electron diffraction and/or other structural techniques including chemical synthesis. Competitive applicants will have a record of achievement in the novel use and/or development of mass spectrometry. Commitments to collaboration, teaching, and the promotion of diversity and inclusion are expected. A generous startup package and modern laboratory space will be provided to support the establishment of an independent research program that advances scientific and programmatic aims. Undergraduate and/or graduate teaching as well as training are also expected.

The university is specifically interested in applicants who complement initiatives in biomedicine, plant sciences, and environmental sciences. Outstanding opportunities for collaboration are available with faculty in the Colleges of Human Medicine, Natural Science, Osteopathic Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, the MSU-DOE Plant Research Laboratory, Michigan AgBioResearch, the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center, the Institute for Quantitative Health Science and Engineering (IQ), Institute for Integrative Toxicology and Plant Resilience Institute, as well as associated institutions in the Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor/Detroit metro areas.

Qualifications & Requirements:

PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field

Expertise in the isolation, analysis, and annotation of small molecules within complex biological matrices and/or extracts using mass spectrometry and/or complementary approaches such as NMR, x-ray crystallography, cryo-electron diffraction and/or other structural techniques including chemical synthesis

Record of achievement in the novel use and/or development of mass spectrometry
